The Competition Tribunal on Friday said the Media 24/Paarl Coldset/Natal Witness merger, which was set to be heard from November 7-11, will now be heard from March 15-30 2012 and on April 4 2012.

Last month the Tribunal granted Caxton (CAT) the right to intervene in the merger proceedings between Media 24 and Paarl Coldset, as the acquiring firms, and the Natal Witness, as the target firm.

According to Caxton, it had a material interest in the proceedings and will be able to assist the tribunal in its consideration of the merger proceedings.

Caxton's application to intervene followed the Competition Commission's conditional approval, on July 14, of the Media 24/Paarl Coldset/Natal Witness merger.

Media 24, Paarl Coldset and The Natal Witness had opposed Caxton's application, as they believed Caxton had not made a proper case for intervening in the merger and it had no genuine interest therein.

Media 24 is a company involved in the publishing and printing of magazines and newspapers, including the provision of electronic news and magazine content on the internet.

Paarl Coldset, the second acquiring firm, is part of the Paarl Media Group.

The Natal Witness publishes and prints various regional and community newspapers, which are primarily distributed in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

Caxton, on the other hand, is a publisher and printer of books, magazines, newspapers and commercial print in SA. - I-Net Bridge
